A good rug often outlives the room it was bought for. You move, the furniture changes, a rug you love — or one your family has owned for decades — no longer fits. Resizing lets you keep it. We resize rugs the way we make them: by hand, with the structure of the rug understood from the inside.
What resizing involves
A rug can't simply be cut like carpet — the pile is held by its foundation, and a cut edge will unravel unless it's properly re-secured. We cut rug to your new size and then rebuild the edge by hand: re-serging the sides, re-binding where appropriate, and re-fringing the ends so the finished rug looks like it was made at that size.

What we can resize
- Handmade wool rugs — including fine hand-knotted pieces, resized knot-for-knot along the design.
- Machine-made and power-loomed rugs — cut down and professionally re-edged.
- Runners — shortened, or a room-size rug cut into a runner for a hallway or staircase.
- Two rugs into one — rugs cut into strips and joined into a new custom design, like an alternating-color runner.
- Damaged rugs — a rug with a worn or damaged end can often be cut past the damage and refinished, saving the rest.
Some rugs — certain patterns, silks, or badly weakened foundations — shouldn't be cut, and we'll tell you honestly before any work starts.

Recent resizing projects
Two rugs, one runner — Oak Park
A client sent us two rugs, one blue and one grey, with an idea: cut both into 11.5-inch strips and join them into a single 4 × 13.5 ft runner with alternating colors. We cut each strip by hand, joined and re-secured every edge, and finished it as one piece — a runner no store could ever sell her.
Common questions
Can any rug be resized?
Most wool rugs, yes — handmade and machine-made. A few shouldn't be: we'll tell you when we see it, and we'll never cut a rug that would be worth less afterward.
Will it look original?
That's the point of doing it by hand. Edges are rebuilt with matching material and technique, and the cut follows the pattern, so the rug reads as made-to-size.
What does rug resizing cost?

Can you clean or repair it at the same time?
Yes — many customers have both done in one visit. Rug cleaning and repair happen in the same facility.
